Lumphini Park, also known as 'Lumpini' or 'Lumpinee' and 'สวนลุมพินี' in Thai, is one of the larger open spaces in Bangkok. The park covers some 57.6-hectare (142-acre) within which are a boating lake, playgrounds, outdoor gyms, exercise areas and is surrounded by a 2.5km jogging track which is popular in the evenings. Within the park is also a public library, dance hall and palm garden (used for concerts in the winter). Just over the road is Suan Lum Night Bazaar and nearby is Patong.
Lumphini Park was created by King Rama VI in 1920, who gave over some royal land to it, then on the outskirts of the city. A statue of the king stands at the park entrance at the end of Silom Street. Today, the city has grown to encompass the park, which is next to the main Business District on Thanon Rama IV road. It is named after Lumphini the birthplace of Buddha in Nepal.
