When first established by King Rama VI through the donation of royal land in 1920, Lumphini Park stood on the outskirts of Bangkok. Today the city has greatly expanded, and Lumphini park covers 57.6-hectares (142-acres) next to the main business district, making it one of the largest parks in the city. It is named after the birthplace of Buddha in Nepal and a statue of the king stands at the main, western entrance.

Within the park are boating lakes, jogging tracks, open air gyms, playing fields, gardens, library and dance hall. Nearby attractions include Suan Lum Night Bazaar and Patong.

King Rama IV was the sixth monarch of Siam, from the House of Chakri and he ruled from 1910 till his death in 1925. Called Vajiravudh, he was known for promoting Siam nationalism, promoting democracy (though not as fast as his detractors would have wished) and enabling Siam to become only minimally involved in WWI.
