Maitland - FURTHER INFORMATION
Maitland - Maitland visitor guide showing a virtual tour of 'Maitland' linked to an interactive map with local and travel information. 360° panoramas from South Australia.
Maitland is a small town in the heart of the Yorke Peninsula in South Australia. The town lies on top of a ridge, some 169 kilometres from Adelaide and 164 south of Port Pirie. Before the arrival of Europeans, the area was known to Aborigines as 'madu waltu' (white flint) and was called 'Maitland' in 1872 after Lady Jean Maitland. The town is laid out in a neat series of square grids surrounded by parkland, much like the center of Adelaide. The area has some of the best barley growing area in South Australia due to an increased rainfall compared to the surrounding area.
The National Trust museum in Maitland gives an overview of settler history in the region. There are also well preserved historic buildings with views over Spencer Gulf and Yorke Valley. The newly developed Chatt Centre contains the local tourist tourist information office, public internet, email facilities, photo download, printing, fax, copying and scanning services.
