City Hall - FURTHER INFORMATION

City Hall - Singapore visitor guide showing a virtual tour of 'City Hall' linked to an interactive map with local and travel information. 360° panoramas from Singapore.

This panorama shows the outside of the City Hall in Singapore which stands next to the Supreme Court. The City Hall was completed in 1929 and was designed to compliment the adjacent Hotel de L'Europe in both size and architectural form.

City Hall was the location of the formal surrender of the Japanese forces in Singapore when the Japanese general Itagaki handed over control to genernal Mountbatten after three years brutal occupation. The turbulence of WWII is commemorated by the War Memorial in War Memorial Park.

Singapore City Hall saw two other important declarations. In 1959 prime minister Lee Kuan Yew declared the independence of Singapore from Britain, and then in 1965 he repeated the act declaring the independence of Singapore from Malaya.

The park on the opposite side of the road to City Hall is the Pandang. To the right of City Hall, past St. Andrew's Cathedral, are the tall towers of Raffles Place, shopping center and Raffles Hotel.
