Praça D. Pedro IV - Lisbon visitor guide showing a virtual tour of 'Praça D. Pedro IV' linked to an interactive map with local and travel information. 360° panoramas from Distrito Lisboa.
Praça D. Pedro IV (Pedro IV Square) has been one of the main squares in central Lisbon since the Middle Ages. It is more commonly known as the Rossio, and used to be the scene of bull fights and revolts. Today, the square is very popular as a meeting place, both for locals and visitors alike. The square is surrounded by many cafés and shops, some of which date from the 18th century, being built after the 1755 Lisbon earthquake.
In the middle of the square, on top of the column shown in this panorama, stands a statue of Pedro IV, King of Portugal and first Emperor of Brasil (as Pedro I). In the base of the column are four feminine figures representing Justice, Wisdom, Power and Moderation. The paving of Rossio was laid in the 19th century in traditional Portuguese style. The National Theatre stands on the northern side of the square.
Praça D. Pedro IV has a rich literary tradition, the 18th century poet Manuel Maria Barbosa du Bocage used to meet friends regularly at the Café Nicola, which still serves customers today. Rossio is just south of Restauradores Square.
