Lac Fourchu (Fourchu Lake) is the largest lake on the Massif du Taillefer plateau. Situated on the northern end of the massif, it is surrounded by Lac de la Veche (Duck Lake), Lac Noir (Black Lake), Lac de l'Agneau (Lamb Lake) and Lac Culasson. Just to the east of Lac Fourchu is the boundary of Ecrins National Park.
Lac Fourchu is roughly 'y' shaped. It is principally maintained by rainfall, and a stream from the southeast feeds from the lake to Gavet Creek and then into the Romanche River. This alpine lake is surrounded by grasses, and a small stand of conifer trees grows on the island in the middle of the lake. Behind the lake, to the south, rise the peaks of La Pyramide (~2800m) and Le Taillefer (2857m)
Lac Fourchu is a popular hiking spot in the summer, being about 1.5 hours out on the GR50 walking trail which starts at Poursollet Lake near Alpe du Grand Serre, a small ski resort.
