Burano, Italy - FURTHER INFORMATION

Burano, Italy - Venice visitor guide showing a virtual tour of 'Burano, Italy' linked to an interactive map with local and travel information. 360° panoramas from Veneto.

Burano is a series of small islands linked by bridges in the Venetian Lagoon a little northeast of Venice. The island is linked by a bridge to Mazzorbo and has a population of about 4,000. It is thought that Burano was settled by the Romans, and was occupied by Altino people in the 6th century. The island grew in importance in the 16th century, when women on the island began making lace with needles which was exported to Lefkara on Cyprus and then across Europe. Traditional lace-making can still be found on Burano today.

Burano - Tourist Attractions

Burano is well known for both lace making and the brightly coloured houses that line the canals, shown in this 360 panorama from Burano. The colours are regulated by the government and only certain schemes are permitted, which maintains the pleasant combination. Other sights of not on Burano include:
  • Church of San Martino - with an impressively-leaning campanile (belltower) and a a Cruxifixion by Tiepolo.
  • Museo del Merletto - lace making museum, one of the Civic Museums of Venice.
  • Oratorio di Santa Barbara - built next to San Martino church.
  • Mazzorbo - neighbouring island linked to Burano by a footbridge.
