Carcassonne (Carcassona) is a famous fortified town in the Languedoc department of France. First founded in 3500 BC on the Carsac hill site, Carcassonne grew to become an important by the 6th century BC and taken by the Romans in the 1st Century BC. The city was often fought over and over the centuries developed impressive fortifications. In 1997 the fortress at Carcassonne was added to the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites. Today the city is divided into the upper 'Cité de Carcassonne' fortress area and the lower 'ville basse' which surrounds it.

TRAVEL DIRECTIONS AND GETTING THERE

Car: Carcassonne is on the A61 about 95km east of Toulouse and 60km west of Narbonne.
Flight: Carcassonne Airport (CCF)
Train: Carcassonne Station on the Bordeaux - Sète and Carcassonne - Rivesaltes lines. There are also high speed links to Lille, Bruxelles, Dijon, Lyon, Marseille and Toulouse.
