Craigmillar Castle - FURTHER INFORMATION
Craigmillar Castle - Edinburgh visitor guide showing a virtual tour of 'Craigmillar Castle' linked to an interactive map with local and travel information. 360° panoramas from Lothian.
Craigmillar Castle is a well preserved medieval castle 3km from the center of Edinburgh. The castle was first built by the feudal barons of Craigmillar in the 14th century and then extended through the 15th and 16th centuries. The castle was sold to Sir John Gilmour in 1660 but then abandoned in the 18th century.
Craigmillar Castle is one of the best preserved castles in Scotland and much of the underlying structure survives, allowing access up to roof level in the tower and to the first floor in much of the rest of the castle. Two sides of the wall are also safe to walk on.
Craigmillar Castle - Highlights
- Tower House – mostly intact with a well preserved Great Hall known as the 'Queen Mary's Room'. This is one of the oldest Tower Houses in Scotland.
- Edinburgh Views - views from the top of Craigmillar Castle's Tower stretch over much of Edinburgh, with both Edinburgh Castle and Holyrood Park with Salisbury Crags and Arthur's Seat visible.
- Castle Grounds - many of the outlying buildings at Craigmillar Castle are also intact, including the chapel in the east garden, and dovecot at the north east corner.
- Exploring - there are many nooks tucked away in the castle that any child will delight in exploring.
