Loulé Castle (Castelo de Loulé) stands on the spur of a hill within modern day Loulé in the Algarve region of southern Portugal. When first built in the 13th/14th century, the 940m long castle walls surrounded Loulé, providing protection to the inhabitants with three defensive towers and ramparts. Within the walls was the 'Alcaidaria, where the commander lived.
Today, the remains of Loulé Castle are entirely surrounded by the modern town. It is open to visitors, and one of the attractions in Loulé. Once inside, visitors will find a courtyard within which stands the Alcaidaria, rebuilt in the 18th century, a well, some medieval blocks, the municipal museum and the arch of the old gateway leading to the town.
This image shows a view of the castle walls from Rua da Barbacã outside. It also shows some of the buildings of the modern town.
