This panorama shows a virtual tour of the inner courtyard of Loulé Castle. The castle was first built around the turn of the 13/14th centuries for the protection of in Loulé in Portugal. When first built it was surrounded by 940m and protected by ramparts running between three defensive towers. Inside the castle was the 'Alcaidaria', which housed the garrison commander.
Loulé Castle's Alcaidaria was visited by numerous Portuguese kings, by King Pedro I in 1359, King Afonso V in 1458, and King Sebastian in 1573. The 14th century building was devastated in the 1755 Lisbon Earthquake and subsequently rebuilt.
Loulé Castle is one of the main tourist attractions in the town. It is open to the public and inside the courtyard, as show here, is a medieval well. The Alcaidaria now serves as a municipal museum, and there is some access to the ramparts.
