Whyalla is the second largest city in South Australia and the regional centre on the Eyre Peninsula. With 300+ days of sunshine per year, Whyalla claims to be an ideal holiday destination or place to live.
Whyalla is located on the western shores of upper Spencer Gulf. Although Matthew Flinders named a small hill Hummock Hill in 1802 it was not until 1901 that a settlement started after iron ore was found in nearby Iron Knob. Settlement of the area was not without challenges because without sufficient rainfall, water had to be brought from Port Pirie in barges. When the town was officially proclaimed in 1914 it was renamed from Hummock Hill to Whyalla.
Prior to European settlement aboriginal tribes have lived in the area for approximately 40,000 years. The area was visited by semi nomadic tribes of Malkaripangala people who were a subdivision of Barngarla aboriginal group culturally linked to the Lake Eyre and Lake Torrens tribes.
Whyalla boasts spectacular outback landscapes, scenic views, vast coastline and is rich in culture and heritage. Whyalla offers seven day a week shopping, fishing, safe swimming beaches and water sports, boating facilities, tours of the land locked HMAS Whyalla, steel works tours and many other activities.
