Arco da Vila stands at the eastern end of Jardim Manuel Bivar (Manuel Bivar Gardens) in Faro, next to Faro Marina and the Faro Tourist Information Center. It was built in the 19th century forming a gateway in the Moorish walls to the Old City (Cidade Velha) and Largo da Sé.
Arco da Vila is an arched gateway, and one of the top attractions in Faro. It was designed by Genoese architect Francisco Xavier Fabri on the orders of Bishop D. Francisco Gomes do Avelar in 1812. Surmounted above Arco da Vila is a bell tower and a statue of St Thomas Aquinus, the patron saint of Faro.
Arco da Vila was renovated and re-opened to the public in 1992, once again allowing access to the 13th century streets of the Old Town. It is not unusual to see storks nesting on Arco da Vila.
