Largo da Sé - FURTHER INFORMATION
Largo da Sé - Faro visitor guide showing a virtual tour of 'Largo da Sé' linked to an interactive map with local and travel information. 360° panoramas from Algarve.
Largo da Sé is the cobbled square outside Faro Cathedral (Sé / Igreja de Santa Maria) in the Cidade Velha district of Faro. The cathedral is an important attraction in Faro, whose interior is richly gilded and decorated with 17th and 18th-century tiles. It site was previously used as a mosque and, before that, the Roman Forum.
Behind the cathedral is a 16th-century convent, now housing the Archeological Museum that includes remains from the nearby Roman ruins of Estoi including a mosaic featuring Neptune and the four winds.
Also on Largo da Sé is the Bishops Palace, but is dominated by the Renaissance-style cathedral which was nearly destroyed by the British during a raid in 1596 when many of the books contained in the library of the Bishop's Palace were taken and now form part of the Bodleian Library in Oxford.
Nearby is Iglesia São Francisco, a church with a plain façade but richly decorated inside with gilt-covered woodwork and blue and white tiles. Also nearby are the Faro Hotel and Doca de Faro (Faro Marina).
