Igreja da Luz

Photographer Description of Igreja da Luz

Church Nossa Senhora of Luz in Carnide, Lisbon

Igreja da Luz - Further Information

The Church of Luz is located in Carnide, Lisbon, was built in 1575 to replace an old chapel, having been seriously damaged in the earthquake of 1755, resisting the chancel, the arch of the cruise and the walls of the church body. Here is buried the Princess Mary, daughter of D. Manuel I, who encouraged enough to build this temple, which also included a hospital. In the altarpiece of the chapel we can see paintings by Diogo Teixeira and Francisco Venegas. It is considered a National Monument.
The Military College, also present in this scene, is a Government School, the Ministry of National Defense and the Army's responsibility, working as a boarding and semi-boarding, administering studies of the 2nd and 3rd cycles of basic education and Education Secondary, for children of military and civilians.
