The garden is quite quiet, planted with trees and surrounded by old buildings with ornate façades. Since the 16th century Jardim da Luz and the church has been a pilgrimage site and a traditional fair takes place in the gardens each year.
One of the mansion buildings on the square was built between 1875-1880 with a neoclassical façade. Since 1940 it has housed the Seminary of the Luz of the Franciscan Order.
