Wallaroo - FURTHER INFORMATION
Wallaroo - Wallaroo visitor guide showing a virtual tour of 'Wallaroo' linked to an interactive map with local and travel information. 360° panoramas from South Australia.
Wallaroo is a historic copper mining town located only 158 km northwest of Adelaide and 13m above sea level. Huge grain silos tower are a distinct landmark for this town which is a mix of seaside resort and industrial town on the northwestern side of the Yorke Peninsula in South Australia.
Wallaroo was a major port for the copper mines at Moonta. Nowadays it is a port
for grain export and for a ferry link between Lucky Bay on Eyre Peninsula and
Wallaroo on Yorke Peninsula.
The first land settlement by Europeans occurred in 1851 when Robert Miller took
up 104 square miles for sheep grazing. The scrubby country became important
when shepherds found copper. By 1862 the town Wallaroo was formally proclaimed.
While copper mining was important for the area, it was Wallaroo's port that was the basis for the town's prosperity. In 1861 a jetty and a copper smelter were built in the town and some 7 years later over 200 people were employed in several smelters until 1923 when the town started to decline after the local smelter closed. Many old limestone buildings are still evidence of the past prosperity of Wallaroo.
