The medieval castle stands in a dominant position on a cliff at an elevation of 378 meters on the inlet that constitutes natural harbor on the Setubal peninsula between the estuaries of the Tagus and Sado. In the middle of, the eighteenth century the earthquake of 1755 caused severe damage to the ancient castle, whose strategic importance is seen committed since then.
