The Gothic Chapel is tucked away on the third floor of Schloss Eggenberg palace in Graz. It is one of the oldest parts of the palace, built in around 1470 by Balthasar Eggenberger, financier to Frederick III, the Holy Roman Emperor after he brought the estate in 1460. The chapel is mentioned in a Papal indulgence dated 30th of May 1470 as 'Capella Beate Marie Virginis Sita In Castro Eckenperg' (the Chapel of the Virgin Mary in Eggenberg Castle).
Much of the rest of Schloss Eggenberg was developed under the ownership of Hans Ulrich von Eggenberg, Balthasar's great-grandson. It was he who developed the grand Baroque palace and commissioned the nearly 600 Baroque paintings that decorate the panels of the State Rooms, which form the star attraction of the palace.
