The Centro Cultural de Belém (Cultural Center of Belém) stands in Belém district on the northern side of the Avenue de Brasilia in Lisbon. It is close to the Monastery of the Jerónimos (Mosteiro dos Jerónimos), Padrão dos Descobrimentos and Torre de Belém tourist attractions. The centre is dedicated to the promotion of the performing arts and also functions as a conference center. Inside there is an active programme of various theatre, dance, music and jazz.
The Centro Cultural de Belém was built between 1988 and 1993 with the aim of providing adequate resources when Portugal took on the presidency of the European Union. Designed by architects Vittorio Gregotti (Italy) and Salty Manuel (Portugal), it is deliberately placed near to the two great monuments dedicated to Portuguese naval exploration.
This panorama shows a view from the southern edge of the Centre, and you can see the Padrão dos Descobrimentos (Standard of Discoveries) monument as well as the Bridge 25 of April and the Museum of Popular Art.
