Burg - FURTHER INFORMATION
Burg - Graz visitor guide showing a virtual tour of 'Burg' linked to an interactive map with local and travel information. 360° panoramas from Styria.
The Burg in Graz was built between 1438 and 1453 by Emperor Frederick III who decided that the older castle on the Schlossberg was too small. In the ensuing centuries, the castle underwent a lot of change and was used as the residence of the Inner Austrian Court until 1619. Today, the Burg houses many of the departments of the government of Styria.
For the visitor, the Burg contains an unusual Double Spiral Staircase, which is a masterpiece of Gothic stonework. Many of the buildings are inscribed with 'AEIOU', the tag used by Emperor Frederick III to mark his possessions and buildings. Within the complex is a stunning Gothic hall, marked on the castle plans, but not open to the public.
Behind the Burg is the Burggarten, a small park and garden containing an Orangery and looking out over the . The Burg is very close to the Cathedral, which was built around the same time and, at one point, attached to the castle, and the Mausoleum. Both are notable Graz attractions.
