The Franciscan Church (Franziskanerkirche) is one of the most prominent churches in Graz, most noted for the tall tower that rises about nearby buildings. The church is part of the oldest monastery in Graz, founded in 1239 by the Minorites and later taken over by the Franciscans. The tall tower was added in 1643.
Inside, Franziskanerkirche has a Gothic nave with a ribbed vault ceiling. The Chapel of St Anthony inside is separated from the church by a Baroque grille (1650) and on the altar is a pietà dated 1720. The church suffered heavy damage during WWII and had to be extensively repaired.
When first built, the monastery stood on a small island next to a tributary to the Mur, which accounts for the oblique orientation of the church to the surrounding area.
