Freiheitsplatz - FURTHER INFORMATION
Freiheitsplatz - Graz visitor guide showing a virtual tour of 'Freiheitsplatz' linked to an interactive map with local and travel information. 360° panoramas from Styria.
Freiheitsplatz is a relatively quite square in Graz, created in 1823 from land donated by a group of Styrian traders after fire destroyed the Staendetheater (standing theatre). Several buildings were demolished to make room for the square and the statue of Kaiser Franz I was erected in 1824.
Today, the square is surrounded by buildings with Biedermeier facades, many of which contain cafes and bars. On the eastern edge is the Schauspielhaus. Freiheitsplatz is very close to the Cathedral, Mausoleum, both top attractions, and Burg, which is famous for an unusual Double Spiral Staricase.
