Lincoln National Park is one of the jewels of Eyre Peninsula.Just 13km south of Port Lincoln, the park has some of the most beautiful scenery in South Australia. This map of the park shows virtual tour panoramas of some of the park highlights.
The park covers about 31,500 hectares of pristine coastal land and has various diverse landscapes. Within it are a couple of lodges and camp grounds (permits required). Apart from the Sleaford-Wanna Dune trail, most of the park is accessible with 2WD vehicles.
Lincoln National Park - Highlights
The park has a Mediterranean climate and diverse landscapes. It is a haven for various rare flora and fauna. Among the park highlights are:- Stamford Hill - contains outcrops of Gawler Craton granite, at about 2,400 to 1,490 million years some of the oldest rock in South Australia.
- Sleaford and Wanna - massive sand dunes formed around 6,000 years ago.
- September Beach - fantastic beach at the northern end of the park with great swimming and good camping.
- Fishermans Point - found at the southern end of the park with great ocean views and good camping.
- Reptiles - some of the reptiles found within the park include geckos, legless lizards, dragons, skinks, brown snakes, snakes and goannas.
- Mammals - some of the mamals to keep a watch for include Western Grey Kangaroo, Western Pygmy Possums, Bush Rats and Western Grey Kangaroo. Some of the offshore islands support colonies of Australian Sea-lions and New Zealand Fur-seals while Right Whales can be seen in the water.
- Birds - Lincoln National Park supports 123 species of birds, some of which are migratory. Among them are Ospreys, White-bellied Sea Eagles and Wedge-tailed Eagles, Western Yellow Robins and the colourful Australian Ringneck Parrot.
- Flora - Most of the park is covered by Mallee vegetation and Bulldog Orchids are sometimes found. The park blooms in spring.
