River Yare (Postwick) - FURTHER INFORMATION

The River Yare flows roughly eastwards through Norfolk. Along the river are various nature reserves, marshes and wetlands. It is popular for boating and fishing, and is navigable from the sea to Norwich. Along the river are also numerous old mills, showing how important the river was as a source of power.
The Yare rises just south of Dereham close to the village of Shipdham and flows towards Barnham Broom. From there the Yare flows on to Baford, where it is joined by the River Tiffey, and then onto Bawburgh just east of Norwich.
The Yare then passes round the southern side of Norwich, past Postwick Marsh, the Surlingham Broads and marinas at Brundall. Next the Yare flows past Buckenham and Cantley to Reedham where it meanders through the Reedham Marshes along the north edge of The Island and Berney Arms. In the final stretch, the Yare flows into Breydon Water, a tidal 'lake', where it is joined by the Rivers Bure and Waveney and finally flows into the North Sea at Gorleston, in Great Yarmouth.
From ancient times the Yare has been navigable from the sea as far as Norwich by small vessels, and was important to regional trade. Transport along the river was improved in the 19th century by the construction of the Haddiscoe Cut. This canal linked the Yare at Reedham to the River Waveney at Haddiscoe, thus avoiding the long route through Breydon Water.
