Freiburg im Breisgau - Schlossberg Castles
Schlossberg is German for Castle Hill, and fortifications have been built on, or in, the hill since the 11th century, with the residents often coming into conflict with the townsfolk below.- Burghaldenschloss - In 1091, Berthold II, Duke of Zähringen, built the Romanesque-style Castum de Friburch that lead to the founding of Freiburg im Breisgau. The fortress was destroyed a number of times over the centuries, but always rebuilt for it's strategic position over the Dreisam River valley. It was finally burnt to the ground in 1366 by the citizens of Freiburg who then brought their freedom from Count Egino II for 15,000 marks in silver.
- Leopoldburg - In 1668, Emperor Leopold I built the Leopoldburg, incorporating parts of the old Burghaldenschloss. It was captured by the French nine years later. Freiburg Fortifications - 17th century, Louis XIV of France ordered both Schlossberg and the entire town of Freiburg to be fortified with a modern, tiered fortification wall. The fortress changed hands between the French, Austrian and French again before the French, forced out by the Habsburgs in 1745, destroyed the fort.
- Quieti Sacrum (Sacred Stillness) - In 1805 Hermann von Greiffenegg, the district President, built a residence on the Schlossberg and named it Quieti Sacrum. It was know by the locals as Greiffeneggschlössle (Greiffenegg's little castle). Today it houses a restaurant with a beer-garden under chestnut trees.
- Water Tank - found inside the Schlossberg, built between 1874 and 1876 to supply Freiburg with water.
- Bomb Shelter - built in the 20th century, entrance on the west side of the Schlossberg.
