Peñarroya Castle - FURTHER INFORMATION
Peñarroya Castle - Ciudad Real visitor guide showing a virtual tour of 'Peñarroya Castle' linked to an interactive map with local and travel information. 360° panoramas from Castilla-La Mancha.
Castillo de Peñarroya is a Moorish castle overlooking the Guadiana river which flows north to Cuidad Real. The castle stands 12km south of Argamasilla de Alba beside the Peñarroya reservoir near Lagunas de Ruidera Natural Park.
Peñarroya Castle was captured from the Moors by Captain Alonso Perez de Sanabria in 1198 and a statue of Mary was 'found' there after the battle. Known as Our Lady of Peñarroya (Nuestra Señora de Peñarroya), the statue has been venerated since that time.
Visitors to Peñarroya Castle will find a Medieval shrine and moat, two walled enclosures, the keep, four towers and the parade ground. Inside are a 17th century chapel, 12 century chapel and a medieval cistern. The chapel serving as the shrine to Nuestra Señora de Peñarroya is decadently decorated in Baroque style with paintings both sides of the altar.
Outside the castle is a Moorish burial ground. Castillo de Peñarroya is listed on the Spanish Historical Heritage. Though an active place of worship, it is also a local tourist attraction and entrance is free.
