Stadtpfarrkirche is the oldest parish church in Graz, first mentioned in historical records in 1343. The full name is 'Stadtpfarrkirche zum Heiligen Blut' (Parish Church of the Holy Blood). The church is near the eastern end of Herrengasse, close to the Mariensäule at Platz am Eisernen Tor.
The church was for a time a small Gothic chapel in the Jewish quarter and later served as a Dominican monastery. Baroque elements were later added, but the altars were replaced by neo-Gothic ones and the only Baroque feature left in Stadtpfarrkirche are the chapel of St. John Nepomuk and the 'Assumption of Mary' above the High Altar.
Stadtpfarrkirche's stained glass windows were destroyed during WWII. The new windows, designed by Albert Birkle from Salzburg caused controversy as they showed Hitler and Mussolini among the torturers of Jesus. Another panorama shows the outside of Stadtpfarrkirche from Herrengasse.
Stadtpfarrkirche is open to the public and is a minor attraction in Graz. It is just down the road from the Landeszeughaus, the Tourist Information Centre and Landhaus Courtyard.
