Platz am Eisernen Tor (Iron Gate Square) marks the boundary between the Old City of Graz and the New Town which has grown up to the east of Jakominiplatz. Within the square stands the Mariensäule (Marian Column), a tall column with a gold-guided statue of Mary on the top, built between 16665-71.
Between 2003 and 2007 a glass lift stood by the Mariensäule. Known as the Marienlift, it raised visitors to the height of the statue giving good views down Herrengasse. It was built to mark Graz's time as the European City of Culture along with the Murinsel and Kunsthaus Graz.
Herrengasse runs west from here to Hauptplatz Graz and the town hall. Along the street, lined by shops and cafes, are some important tourist attractions. The first is Stadtpfarrkirche, the oldest parish church in Graz featuring Hitler and Mussolini in the stained glass windows. Next is Landeszeughaus, or Graz Armoury, which contains the largest medieval collection of arms and armour on earth and is one of the top tourist attractions in Graz. Beside this are the Tourist Information Centre and Landhaus Courtyard.
