Leonhardplatz is about 2.5km northeast of Hauptplatz and the center of Graz. It is named after the district of St Leonhard in which it is found. This is a busy road junction on the 65 which runs east out of the city towards Schillingsdorf.

Nearby are St Leonhardkirche, an interesting church in which a new auditorium has been added to a much older nave, and St Leonhard Cemetery (St. Leonhard-Friedhof). Hilmteichstrasse runs north from Leonhardplatz past a large hospital, LKH University Kinkum Graz and up past Hilmteich Lake and Restaurant on the way to Mariatrost and the Mariatrost Basilica.
