Saas-Almagell is the southernmost village in the Saastal Valley, about 5 km from Saas-Fee in Switzerland. At an altitude of 1672m it is also the highest village in the valley. Marketed as the 'Mountain Pearl' of Saastal, Saas-Almagell has retained it's traditional charm, set with small mountain huts and a few shops. Some of the houses now serve as hotels and there is a youth hostel and various chalets here too capable, in total, of sleeping around 2000 people. South of Saas-Almagell the Monte-Moro Pass crosses over to Macugnaga in Italy, a route used by the Romans.
Saas-Almagell is popular all year round, the attractions being the mountains which provide the setting for various mountain sports and walking in the summer and then skiing in the winter.

One of the more famous walking routes is the Mattmark - Monte-Moro pass that links Saas-Almagell with Macugnaga in Italy. This is a difficult trail taking about 3.5 hours to complete. On the way walkers pass by the east face of the Monte-Rosa, the highest wall of ice in the Alps. The lake is 3.2km long and covers 176 ha. Various tracks lead into the hills above it and small waterfalls and streams feed into it.
Further afield are walks starting in Saas-Fee. From here the walk up Mittaghorn (3142m) is popular, with views of Bietschorn (3934m), Egginer (3366m) and Weissmies (4023m) from the top.
