The Templo del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús (Temple of the Sacred Heart of Jesus) is a monumental neo-Gothic church on the top of Tibidabo Mountain in Barcelona. It was built between 1902-1961 and surrounded by walls similar to the fortress on Montjuïc. It was designed by Enric Sagnier i Villavecchia along the lines of a Roman temple with Gothic interior and is know colloquially as the 'Temple Expiatori Sagrat Cor'. The church is approached up vast steps which flank the entrance. Visitors are greeted by an ornate facade above which is richly decorated tympanum (arch) surrounded by sculptures.
Visitors enter through the crypt, built between 1903-11 in neo-Byzantine style and highly decorated with mosaics and stained glass windows. Eight columns support an octagonal dome decorated with an image of the 'Sacred Heart' painted by Josep Miret in 1950 . From there visitors pass through to the chapel of Perpetual Adoration (Adoración Perpetua), built between 1940-49, decorated with marble floors and a huge bronze statue of the 'Sacred Heart'.
The main temple building itself was built between 1915-51 with extra towers being added until final completion in 1961. It is a square building with three naves. There are four large rosette stained glass windows and various other Gothic, arched windows depicting various scenes. Also within the church are statues of various saints.
