Plaza de España (Square of Spain) is a large square in the center of Madrid and a very popular tourist attraction and meeting point. The history is less appealing, in the early 19th century it was used by French firing squads to execute prisoners taken during the May 2nd uprising. Nowadays it is full of tourist and street vendors.
Plaza de España lies at the western end of the Gran Vía, a short distance from Palacio Real and Almudena Cathedral. Within it is a monument to Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra who wrote Don Quixote de la Mancha, some gardens and a large fountain. The square is bordered by two of Madrid's most prominent skyscrapers, La Torre de Madrid built in 1957 and Edificio de España completed in 1953.
