The statue of Catherine of Braganza (Catarina de Bragança) stands in the Parque do Tejo, next to the Vasco da Gama Bridge in Lisbon. It is a monument to Catherine of Braganza who became Queen of England through her marriage to King Charles II in 1662. She was responsible for introducing and promoting Tea drinking to England.
Catherine of Braganza was born in Vila Viçosa, Évora, Portugal, on November 26, 1638 and died in the Palace of Bemposta in Lisbon in 1705. She was buried in the Jeronimos Church, her body was later relocated to the Pantheon of the Church of San Vicente de Fora.
Adapting to English life was not easy, but Catherine not only survived the intrigues of the day, but also knew how to use their power. As well as tea drinking, Catherine introduced porcelain and the tea pot to England, as well as Italian opera.
Catherine of Braganza was quite popular in the United States of America and a statue of her stands in the Queens district of New York City. She returned to Portugal a few years after the death of King Charles II, having been twice regent of Portugal.
This monument is located near the southern end of Parque do Tejo on the Tagus River Walk. The walk continues south through the Park of Nations (Parque das Nações) and is near to Lisbon Oceanarium, one of the largest public Oceanariums in Europe. Also nearby are the Pavilion of Portugal, a multi-purpose space which housed the Portuguese exhibit at the Expo 1998, and the 140m high Vasco da Gama Tower, which has amazing view over the Park of Nations, Homem Sol and the River Tagus.
