Magelang is one of the largest cities in the Magelang Regency of central Java in Indonesia. The city lies on fertile river plains between the Progo river and Elo river, and is one of the most densely populated areas in Central Java. It was founded in 907 when it was called Mantyasih and is mentioned in the copper Mantyasih stele. Magelang became the seat of government during British colonial rule and later came under Dutch rule.
Magelang - Attractions
Magelang has a number of temples and other places of interest nearby:- Borobudur Temple (Candi Borobudur) - 9th century Buddhist temple about 10 km north west of Yogyakarta.
- Pawon Temple (Candi Pawon) - 9th century temple near Borobudur built during the Sailendra dynasty.
- Canggal Temple - the temple has a Sanskrit transcription bearing the name of the first Mataram Kingdom ruler, Sanjaya.
- Museum Pangeran Diponegoro - housed in the Karesidenan Kedu building and contains the chair of Prince Diponegoro and other items.
- Jalan Pemuda (Youth Street) - this 1.5km long road forms the Chinatown of Magelang.
- Alun-alun - town square of Magelang on which stands the City Hall, other notable buildings and Kauman mosque.
- Kyai Langgeng Park - covering 28 hectares the park contains botanical gardens, children's playground and provides access to the Progo River.
- Badaan Park - found on Jalan Pahlawan (Pahlawan Road it contains a children's playground and various animal statues.
- Mount Tidar (Gunung Tidar) - also known as the 'Nail of Java' after the legend which says it is here that Java is nailed to the earth. On the hill lie the remains of Syekh Subakir from Iran and the Akademi Militer (Military Academy).
- Magelang Golf - there is a golf course near to Mount Tidar (Gunung Tidar).

Drive: Magelang is located 43 km north from Yogyakarta, and 75 km south of Semarang, the capital of Central Java.
