Elliston - FURTHER INFORMATION

Elliston is a small coastal town in South Australia on Waterloo Bay on the west coast of Eyre Peninsula. The region was first explored by Europeans in 1802 when Matthew Flinders charted the coastline in 'HMS Investigator'. In 1840, Edward John Eyre explored the area from land and founded a homestead here, originally called Waterloo Bay.
There are two theories as to how the name Elliston arose. One says that it is named after Ellen Liston, a writer who emigrated to Australia in the 1850's. The other is that it is named for Sir Henry Walton Ellis (1783–1815) who fought in the Battle of Waterloo, which would link the name also with Waterloo Bay on which the town rests.
