There are two theories as to how Elliston got it's name. One is that it is named after Ellen Liston, a writer who emigrated to Australia in the 1850's. The other that it is named for Sir Henry Walton Ellis (1783–1815), a hero who fought in the Battle of Waterloo, which also provides a link with the naming of Waterloo Bay.
