White Cliffs - FURTHER INFORMATION

White Cliffs - White Cliffs visitor guide showing a virtual tour of 'White Cliffs' linked to an interactive map with local and travel information. 360° panoramas from New South Wales.

White Cliffs is located 89 kilometres north of Wilcannia, 1,050 kilometres north-west of Sydney in New South Wales. After opal was found by kangaroo shooters on Momba Station in 1889, White Cliffs developed quickly into an important Opal Field with an estimated population of 5,000 in 1900.

Today the less populated town is accessible by sealed road, has an all weather airstrip, fuel, store, solar power station, and has become home to opal miners, artists, photographers, tourist operators and others with many of them living underground in dugouts to avoid the weather extremes experienced in this part of outback Australia.

Due to the good road conditions the town and its moon like landscape has become a tourist attraction creating new ways of income for the friendly permanent residents offering a range of accommodation, galleries and opal shops.

To escape the summer heat, many of the homes and facilities are built in old mine shafts underground. Visitors who do not fancy the thought of sleeping underground with many tons of rocks above them can find comfortable air conditioned motel accommodation at the White Cliffs Hotel which is also a good place for a yarn with locals or to quench the thirst after spending the day in the hot and dusty surrounds.
