Millau is a small town in the Aveyron department of France. It is built on the confluence of the Tarn and Dourbie rivers and is most famous for the Viaduc de Millau (Millau Viaduct) which spans the valley and opened in 2004.
In the 1st Century Millau was an important Roman town providing some of the best pottery in the Roman Empire for 150 years from a site near the river on the banks of the Tarn. In the Middle Ages it was a major crossing point for the Tarn.
Millau - Tourist Attractions
Aside from the famous Viaduc de Millau, Millau has several other attractions for visitors:- Jardin botanique des Causses - local botanical garden.
- Millau Glove Museum
- Millau Micropolis - insect museum and zoo.
- Paragliding - Millau is the 'capital of France' in the paragliding fraternity.
- Église Notre-Dame-de-l'Espinasse - current church dates from the 17th century, used to be a pilgrim site with part of the 'Crown of Thorns'. Decorated with 20th century frescoes by Jean Bernard and stained-glass windows by Claude Baillon.
- Roquefort Cheese - manufactured in the caves of nearby Roquefort.
- Place du Maréchal Foch - 12th century arcade where you will find the incription 'Gara qué faras' (Watch what you are doing).
- Passage du Pozous - a 13th century fortified gateway.
- Place Emma Calvé Belfry - a 12th century square tower topped by an octagonal 17th century tower on the Place Emma Calvé.
