The Altar of St Zenobius is at the far end of Florence Cathedral, behind the High Altar, and is not generally accessible to the public. Zenobius (San Zanobi, Zenobio) lived between 337–417 and was the first bishop of Florence. He was born into a pagan family but converted to Christianity and was baptised by Theodore. At first opposed by his family, he eventually led his parents to Christ.
Zenobius then spent some time in Rome before returning to Florence to take up the post of Bishop. He devoted himself to evangelising Florence and its outskirts completely and combating Arianism. It is believed that he died on 25 May 417, which has become his feast day, and was first buried in the Basilica di San Lorenzo di Firenze (consecrated by St. Ambrose in 393), and later transfered to the Church of Santa Maria del Fiore (the Cathedral / Duomo). A statue of St Zemobius adorns the façade of the cathedral and inside the Duomo is a painting of him on one of the pillars.
