Matanuska Glacier - FURTHER INFORMATION
Matanuska Glacier - Anchorage visitor guide showing a virtual tour of 'Matanuska Glacier' linked to an interactive map with local and travel information. 360° panoramas from Alaska.
Matanuska Glacier is the largest glacier accessable by road in Alaska, 27 miles long by 4 mile wide. Meltwater from the glacier forms the headwaters of the Matanuska River, which flows through the Mat-Su Valley, past Palmer and enters the sea at Knik Arm of Cook Inlet about 25miles northeast of Anchorage.
Matanuska Glacier is considered 'active' and grows at a rate of about 30cm per day. The glacier has unusual weather conditions, a weather hole over the glacier means that it is often much clearer and sunnier here than elsewhere in Mat-Su Valley.
It is open to the public between March and October and is a popular tourist attraction in the region with various companies offering Glacier trekking, ice climbing and other activities in the region. From the car park is the Edge Nature Trail, a 20-minute walk through boreal forest to glacier viewing platforms.
Nearby is the Matanuska Glacier State Recreation Site which has a camp-ground and in the area are numerous small Bed and Breakfast places and lodges.
