Named after the Roman god of War, the Parc du Champ de Mars one of the largest parks in Paris. With the Eiffel Tower (Tour Eiffel), the most popular tourist attraction in Paris, at the northern end it is also one of the most photographed.
Parc du Champ de Mars originally covered 42 hectares, but was reduced in size by Jean-Camille Fromigé for the 1889 Universal Exposition (Expositions Universelles) and again by early 20th century developers. It now covers 24.5 hectares.
At the eastern end of the Parc du Champ de Mars is the Ecole Militaire. Here also is the Monument of Peace (Wall of Peace), which contains the word 'Peace' written on 32 columns in 32 languages. The Monument of Peace was installed in 2000.
