Cobar Tourist Information Center - FURTHER INFORMATION

Cobar Tourist Information Center - Cobar visitor guide showing a virtual tour of 'Cobar Tourist Information Center' linked to an interactive map with local and travel information. 360° panoramas from New South Wales.

Cobar is an outback mining town at the crossroads of the Kidman Way and the Barrier Highway in New South Wales, 710 kilometres west of Sydney and 825 kilometres north of Melbourne. Set in a semi-arid landscape, the town with 3 major gold and copper mines also services surrounding agricultural stations. Cobar is named from Ngiyampaa Kuparr.

Cobar exists because of the discovery of Copper in the region in 1870 which lead to the founding of the Great Cobar Copper Mining Company Limited in 1878. Copper mining operations ceased in 1920, but in the 1980s gold, silver, lead and zinc were discovered. The important mining belts include Cobar belt, the Canbelego belt and the Girilambone belt and visits to the mine can be arranged through the Tourist Information Office.
