Piazza Cesare Beccaria - Florence visitor guide showing a virtual tour of 'Piazza Cesare Beccaria' linked to an interactive map with local and travel information. 360° panoramas from Tuscany.
Piazza Cesare Beccaria is a major traffic intersection in Florence, laid out by Giuseppe Poggi in 1876 when Florence was still the capital of Italy. It is dedicated to Cesare Bonesana marchese di Beccaria. Around the square are several concave neoclassical palaces and the State Archives building. Beneath it is a new car park.
When first built it was known as 'Piazza alla Croce' after the Porta alla Croce (Gate of the Cross) found in the middle. This is one of the city gates, built in 1284 as part of the fortifications of Florence. Inside Porta alla Croce is the badly damaged 'Madonna and Child with St John the Baptist and St Ambrose' fresco by Michele di Rodolfo; St Ambrose Church is a short walk away.
