Chiesa San Marco (Church of San Marco) stands on San Marco Square in Florence. The original church was built by Silvestrine monks in 1299, but transferred to Dominicans of Fiesole by Pope Eugene IV in 1436, the year he consecrated Florence Cathedral. Much of the church was rebuilt around this time, financed by Cosimo de' Medici the Elder.
The Chapel of St Antonino and the Salviati Chapel were added around 1588 and the church was further altered by Pier Francesco Silvani in 1678. The Neo-Classical façade dates from the 18th century.
Several important people of the 15th century lived in San Marco, including Fra Angelico, Fra Bartolomeo, St. Anthony, Cosimo the Elder and fra Girolamo Savonarola, who preached against the Catholic church and the Pope, predicted the end of the world and was hanged and burnt by the church in Piazza della Signoria.
