Udine is the capital of Friuli and the larger Friuli-Venezia Giulia region in northern Italy. Though inhabited since Neolithic times, the earliest written mention of Udine dates from 983 when Utinum castle was donated to the Patriarchs of Aquileia by emperor Otto II. In 1420 Udine was conquered by the Republic of Venice and remained under the control of Venice until 1797, when if fell, for a short time, under French rule, followed by Austrian rule until being incorporated into the Kingdom of Italy in 1866.
Udine - Tourist Attractions
- Castello - 16th century Castello now housing the Museo Civico and the Galleria d'Arte Antica with art from the 15th century onwards.
- Udine Cathedral (Duomo) - 13th century Gothic cathedral church remodelled in the 18th century decorated with stucco and frescoes by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo.
- Museo del Duomo (Cathedral Museum) - housing a significant collection of art and cultural items from the time Bertrando was Patriarch of Aquileia in the 14th century.
- Galleria d'Arte Moderna (Gallery of Modern Art) - with over 4000 works of art from paintings and drawings to sculpture, from the mid 1800s up until today.
- Oratorio della Purità - small church behind teh cathedral with frescoes by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo and Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo, his son. Piazza della Libertà - important square around which are the Loggia del Lionello (Palazzo del Comune) the 16th century Porticato (Loggia) di San Giovanni.
- Museo Etnografico del Friuli (Ethnological Museum of Friuli) - housed in the Palazzo Giacomelli in via Grazzano, housing various temporary exhibitions.
- Gallerie del Progetto di Palazzo Morpurgo - design museum with works by architects Raimondo D'Aronco, Ottorino Aloisio, Pietro Zanini, Marcello D'Olivo, Angelo Masieri and, for design, the archive of Electrolux Zanussi.
- Museo Friulano di Storia Naturale (Friuli Museum of Natural History) - with an extensive collection and displays of the botany, mineralogy, zoology and entomology of Friuli Venezia Giulia.
