Cimitero delle Porte Sante occupies much of ground on top of Mons Fiorentinus (also called San Miniato Hill) around San Miniato al Monte Basilica in Florence. The cemetery itself was laid out in 1857 in following the plans of Nicola Matas. It became the burial ground of many famous people from 19th century Florence and contains some ostentatious mausoleums and gravestones.
Porte Sante Cemetery is surrounded by walls. These were first erected in haste by Michelangelo during the siege and in 1553 and later expanded into a true fortress (fortezza) by Cosimo I de' Medici.
San Miniato al Monte - Other ImagesSan Miniato al Monte is considered one of the finest Romanesque churches in Tuscany. Other pictures taken in and around the church show:
- Nave showing the free-standing Cappella del Crocefisso (Chapel of the Crucifix), the painted, trussed and coffered ceiling, and 13th century patterned floor.
- Sacristy decorated with beautiful 14th century frescoes depicting the life of St Benedict and the Four Evangelists.
- San Miniato al Monte Crypt, the oldest part of the church with vaulted ceilings and, supposedly, an altar containing the bones of San Miniato.
- 11th century Facade and view over Florence taken from the top of the steps leading to San Miniato al Monte.
