Umag - FURTHER INFORMATION
Umag - Umag visitor guide showing a virtual tour of 'Umag' linked to an interactive map with local and travel information. 360° panoramas from Istra.
Umag is a coastal city on the Istra Peninsula in Croatia. The remains of various Roman second-home holiday villas (villa rustica) all along the coast indicate that the Umag coastline has been a popular holiday resort from ancient times. After the Romans the region suffered from numerous invasions, eventually coming under the rule of Venice from the 13th to 18th centuries. There then followed brief periods of French and Austrian rule before becoming part of Croatia.
Umag was mostly surrounded by agricultural land. It is known for good winemaking, which has been accompanied by an expanding tourism industry. Visitors are particularly attracted to Umag by the beautiful coastline and countryside as well as agro-tourism in the surrounding area. Umag also hosts the Croatia Open Umag, part of the ATP World Tour 250 series tennis.
