Mercado de San Miguel - PHOTOGRAPHER COMMENT
Of all the places in Old Madrid, the Mercado de San Miguel is the most friendly, unique and enjoyable. Situated in the Plaza San Miguel, just off the Calle Mayor, this market is a wonderful place to visit if you're looking to get the feel of the city for the first time. Inside, you'll find stalls selling ready-to-eat cured ham, cheese, olives, oysters and tapas as well as dried pulses, fresh fish and fruit...The idea is purchase a glass of wine to wander around with, then amble leisurely from counter to counter sampling all the delights on offer – from cheese tapas to the famous jamon Iberico.

The 'Mercado de San Miguel' is one of the oldest covered markets in Madrid. Located near la Plaza Mayor and Plaza de la Villa, it was recently refurbished and is now a popular tourist attraction, selling all kinds of foods. Of particular interest are the 100+ variety of cheese on offer. Visitors can also have oysters with a glass of wine while reading a book bought in the library recently opened inside the place.
Mercado de San Miguel has 33 shops offering a great variety of the best delicatessen products in Madrid, set in a magnificent setting. The recent refurbishment has left the old metal structure of the original market, built in 1916, exposed. It is the only surviving market of that era in Madrid and has certainly become the soul of the Plaza de San Miguel!
