Mons Fiorentinus - FURTHER INFORMATION

Mons Fiorentinus - Florence visitor guide showing a virtual tour of 'Mons Fiorentinus' linked to an interactive map with local and travel information. 360° panoramas from Tuscany.

Mons Fiorentinus rises from the southern banks of Arno River and the top is the highest point in Florence. It is also known as 'San Miniato Hill' after the Basilica di San Miniato al Monte found on the top. This church is a very popular tourist attraction.

Near the top of Mons Fiorentinus is Piazzale Michelangelo, which has stunning panoramic views over Florence and from which many popular paintings of the skyline around Florence Cathedral are painted. The piazzale contains bronze copies of Michelangelo's David and other works, and is backed by a panoramic restaurant. Also nearby is San Salvatore al Monte church.

Mons Fiorentinus - Florence Skyline

As you ascend Mons Fiorentinus more and more of the Florence Skyline, and some of the most important buildings and attractions, become visible. Dominant in this picture taken about half way up the hill is Porta San Niccolò (St. Nicholas Gate), which was built in 1324 as part of the defensive walls around Florence. This gate still retains the original height. To the left of it you can see the spire of Santa Croce and then the massive dome of Florence Cathedral and Giotto's Campanile. Further round to the left is the tower of Palazzo Vecchio on Piazza della Signoria, tallest building in Florence.
